Some states better than others?
Hello all,
What states did you adopt from and how was your subsidy experience? We adopted from Massachusetts and were originally told we would get childcare credit while fostering before finalization. When that was not true and we requested it, we were told to stop visiting our child, because we must not be the right match! We decided to give in, because childcare wasn't worth such games. Also, we didn't get fostercare payments for a couple of months and the insurance didn't switch over to our state in a timely fashion, so we were paying full-price for therapy, meds and childcare out of our pockets for a couple of months. We are now considering our second, but my partner is leary of going out of state now that we have a house and more serious family budget. She is afraid we'll get a placement we can't afford and not be able to make the mortgage and afford the afterschool program for two children. However, we're in RI, a very small state, and I prefer to expand our options. What states are better about providing the support a child needs for medical assistance, therapy and even better... a little extra to allow for music lessons or a sport of some kind? I feel like such a jerk, worrying about money when we're talking about a child and future member of our family. Unfortunately, budgeting and financial limits are a sad part of life. |

We adopted in PA (where we live). Our experience went smoothly. All medical expenses are paid for plus each child (we adopted 4) gets a decent amount each month. I don't know if it went easier because we adopted within our own state or not.

I adopted in MASS and I have had a good subsidy experience. I am also a MASS resident so possibly that could have made things happen quicker?? Only once I had a delay in payment. It was my fault...I was supposed to submit a letter from my daughters therapist and I wasnt aware of the procedure (she was receving PACT). The only problems I have had is I can never find a therapist/psychiatrist that accepts both Tufts and Mass Health.

We have adopted from Missouri,Texas(3xs),and Wisconsin. We got no sub or medical from Missouri as he was considered normal. And we were in the Army at that time so he was covered by the Gov.The first one from TX was private so no sub or medical(although she was later given bipolar diagnoises) The next came from WI where we live and he gets a very good sub and full medical until he is 18.He was a newborn FTT and listed with CP from birth. Our last two came from TX and their subs were the top of what that state allows(very low compared to some states) and the both recieve medical until 18.We now await our next placement!!
Questions--go to the NACAC/State Adoption Subsidy Profiles and search the state where you wish to look for your adoption. Good Luck |
