Home Modifications
We are in the process of adopting a little boy from WA (we are in MN) who has multiple medical needs. He was placed in our home in Aug. '03 and finalization was supposed to happen in Feb. '04 but it was delayed do to staff changes in WA and then again here in MN. Since placement, he has been diagnosed with additional problems that require him to be in a wheelchair and/or use a walker to get around. Previously, it was just thought that he was delayed because of his other medical problems and would be able to walk independently eventually. Because of this, we were not prepared to have our home wheelchair accessible. Our home is quite old and needs multiple adaptations such as a wheelchair ramp, widening the doorways, enlarging the bathroom and laundry room, adding on a main floor bedroom, etc. At this point, we don't know if it will be worth the cost to modify this home or if we would be better off trying to find a home that would be easier to adapt. Regardless, this is going to cost us a bunch of money that we were not prepared for. Since we haven't finalized yet, is it possible to write something into the subsidy/finalization paperwork where the child's home state would help cover the costs of modifications or help towards the purchase of a different home?
