Question home study - question about pets

we are suppose to be starting a home study soon. The problem is I am scared we are going to pay and go through the whole process just so they can tell me no. I have a pet that is almost thirteen years old and blind. We keep him in a kennel when people are over. He is not tolerant of strangers. Will this be held against me?
Do I have to wait for my pet to die in order to do my home study? We would never allow him around our new child. Please someone give me some advice.

Thumbs up

With a plan for keeping your child safe from your pet and a letter from your vet there should not be any issues around your beloved pet. Unless Alabama has laws around pets and adoptions you do not need to wait. Don't hesitate to ask your social worker about it right away. Remember, they want real familes for real children! The social worker is there to help you grow your family and should be trusted to answer all your questions. If you don't trust your worker, request one that fits your families needs and personalities.

I agree with the above poster. I also wanted to let you know, the sw generally is pretty helpful, so if you have any issues you feel might be "red flag" issues, be sure to ask your placement agency first (if different from your social worker), because if it is a "hot topic" they may give you advice about how best to introduce the subject. In the end though, my main point is to ask your sw about it right away... they will advise you before doing the complete homestudy and charging you!

By the way, I am also from Alabama! We are from the Birmingham area.

I have a blind dog too and I was concerned with the homestudy as well. But I have a daycare and our dog is kept away from everyone so it was never an issue there. I was reassured that as long as I have a plan to keep my child safe then it should be ok.
