Fast or slow?

Depends on your state and which county. We live in L.A. County in California. The home study process can take up to one year. However, we chose to adopt three siblings before we completed our home study. We met them at an adoption festival. Believe me, as soon as the social workers found out we wanted to adopted three kids, our home study was completed in about 3 months. There are so many variables. For instance, if you want to adopt an African American child, it could go even faster. But if have not identified any children, they'll take their time completing it.
