Tax credit plain and simple
There is a lot of threads here that are hard to understand as people are trying to figure out the tax credit. For those of us who can't wade through all that information to get the bottom line, perhaps this will help.
There are TWO kinds of tax credits. Refundable, in which you can actually get cash back if you do not use the full credit, and Non-refundable in which you cannot and will not get cash back. The adoption tax credit is, very unfortunately, NON-refundable. Do not expect to get a large refund due to this credit after doing your taxes. I did a lot of research to find this out and this is what I have discovered it basically comes out to. I hope this helps someone else who gets as easily confused as I do.
