What exactly can I deduct for adoption?

No. Adoption-related expenses are really anything that you wouldn't normally have to pay if you would have had the baby naturally. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if the expense would have occurred whether you would have adopted or whether you would have had the baby naturally. For instance, buying a crib and clothes would have occurred no matter how the baby came about, so it is not deductable. However, paying a lawyer, adoption agency fees, travel expenses to another city to pick up the child, etc. would have only occurred in the adoption scenario, so they are deductable.
