We did one for less that 10,000 through an agency.

Definitely ! I know of two income based agencies with the max fee is $8k - one is for AA/biracial kiddos & one is for special needs.

Good luck

Yes, especially if you take into account the tax credit.

My DH & I are currently looking at our options for adoption. We don't have a lot of money to spend on an adoption but do plan on raising the money through fundraisers & extra work at our jobs. I have also started a new home business that all my commissions will go towards the adoption. We have been TTC for 7 years and really want an infant. We've been looking at DHS due to no cost. I would love for you to send me a message on which adoption agencies you have dealt with & cost. How long did you wait? I have spoken with several agencies and have been told it could take 3-4 years.

Our adoption is not yet complete, but we are saving $14,800 which is the max we will need (including our homestudy and travel costs). But, ours is embryo adoption so it's a little different to traditional domestic adoption. Oh, and that total is BEFORE the tax credit, so if we can get that back, we'll spend less than $1500 on our whole adoption.

We are using Nightlight Christian Adoptions as our agency, and their wait times are not too bad. Without all of the issues we've had on our end (long testing and delays), we could have had an embryo within 10 months of starting the process! Their domestic program usually has a 1-2 year wait and costs roughly $20,000.

You cannot get the tax credit for an embryo adoption, just so you know.

We are matched with a Emom that is due tomorrow! so baby could be here anytime! Ours is an independant/private adoption just working with a private social worker (no agency) and a lawyer. Our expected total fees including all legal/court fees, social worker fees and travel comp, hotel while baby is in the hospital....etc. is going to be no more than 4,000$ It is possible indeed!

Good Luck!

I have heard that some people actually have received the tax credit, but obviously I don't have personal experience.

It absolutely is.

DS#1, independent match with a lawyer, advertised online to find his birthmom -- 12.5K

DD and DS#2, special needs agency matches, 4.5K and approx 8.5K respectively. One child in this program thanks to substance exposure, the other thanks to significant prematurity. Both are doing exceptionally well.

If I get the adoption credit refunded this year as expected, DS#1's adoption will have cost us 2K or so and DD's adoption will have been free.

If I can finalize this year for DS#2 (potential, but unlikely), his will be free as well.

All my kids are children of color, though these fees would have been the same if they were caucasian.

Good luck!

Yes, it is. The costs for our domestic adoption in 2008 was $13,500 total, including travel, pp visits, etc.

We are anticipating that we will spend no more than $15,000 this next time around, and it might be well under that.
