government grants-do they really work?

Hello-
We are in the process of adopting a second child and need grants. As I have read, it seems that most grants that we apply for never materialize. Has anyone besides Karen, PA actually rec'd any money from government grants?? If so, do you use any of the free grant book-e/books on line. Thanks, Keri B
