We are just beginning the adoption process. We want to adopt a child through the PA state system.
In my ignorance, I thought we'd work directly with the county, but apparently we need to go through an agency. So, I have gotten the list from the Statewide Adoption Network, and started calling agencies. Here's my question.... Can agencies charge fees for a state adoption? Most places have said they are free, but the agency I like the most seems to have a sliding scale. We can afford some fees, spread out over time, but I just wondered if I'm getting hoodwinked. The woman said their fees are usually no more than $1500 total. Is that right? We will be meeting with her in person next Tuesday. So, I'd like to know what to expect is CORRECT before that meeting. Also, can whatever fees we incur like that be credited back to us on our taxes? Is that what the tax credit is for?? THANKS! Sharel |

DH and I are also in PA and looked into SWAN (State wide adoption network) for PA. Our understanding is that either the fees are waived or you will be reimbursed if you do an in-state adoption.
The agency we had used for the domestic process was going to reimburse the fees if we had gone thru with an in-state adoption, (but I wouldn't recommend that agency). Are there any other SWAN agencies in your area you could check into? I hope that helps! |
