Two at a time

My husband and I have a 20 month old son who was born in Kazakhstan. We are considering adopting a toddler boy and an infant girl. My question is for those of you who have adopted two at once how did you afford it? Did you take at a loan for most of it? Or have it all saved up?

We are in the process of adopting 2 kids from Kaz now and are using a HELOC for most of it. However, we did this knowing that we will get a good chunk back from the adoption tax credit and adoption benefits from my company.

Try refinancing your home and taking some cash out. We did this and we were paid back + more from the adoption tax credit. The IRA splits it up over 2 years. It's a nice THANK YOU from the gov't.

This very same question was on my mind. Will it be double all of the fees for 2 children or does that vary due to agencies, etc?
BTW, what is HELOC? newbie here

My husband and I would like to adopt 2 siblings any where from infant on up to about 6. We are very open so far as where they fall in the age range and whether they are a boy or girl. How hard is this, are we dreaming an impossible dream?

We have to bDD's and love them dearly. They are now school age and I am not allowed to have any more children. An infant would be nice BUT, I have a sense that older children need me more...I've been blessed to have 2 infants of my own....2 more than many have.

sorry for rambling.

HELOC is "Home Equity Line of Credit"

If you adopt both children from the same agency, then you should only have to pay one agency fee, but you'll still have two country fees.

We're adopting two at once from two different countries (yes, I know we're nuts!). Have you considered Liberia? There are so many kids who need homes and the cost is much, much lower than other countries.

Good luck!

Wow, we added on to our house for more room. More room = more kids right
So a HELOC wont' work for us, guess we will have to keep saving and hopping one of thos school loans magically disappears!

How to pay -- we took out a 2nd mortgage

Can you adopt 2 -- absolutely, we adopted 2 bio brothers from Vladivostok Russia. At referral they were 22 months and 36 months. We brought them home 5 months later. We have been home a little over 1 year and it is going great.

Ages -- if you are open to siblings who may be a couple of years apart, there are lots of them. We asked for two boys, an infant and up to 36 months. When our agency asked if we would consider our boys, as they were a little older, it was the best thing for our family! We have two bio daughters and the boys being a little older have made the transition much smoother (I think)

Fees -- 1 agency fee, a reduced fee for the 2nd child, but the huge savings was in the travel.

We knew we wanted two boys so it only made sense for us. With the boys being brothers and only being in the orphanage for 6 months their transition into our family and our attachment has gone very well.

Good luck... Tracie

Has anyone heard what the taz credit is like in Canada? I heard it was only around $1500. My DH and I were also wondering how to finance this adventure...

You should look in to haiti. To adopt 2 children it would be between $12,000 and $20,000 and that is for both. It depends on if you do it independent or thru an agency These are some great orphanages there. And the children are beautiful. PM me if you have any questions. By the way we are adopting from 2 countries and 2 agencies. We used a home equity loan or as I call it the Lilly loan.
