hairdos
OK I need a cute hairdo fix... anyone have pics for me? Also I need ideas for Athena for when she gets older. Cornrows, beads, and twists would be appreciated.
(Just got off a thread in the guatemala room showing websites with all kinds of cute bows so I'll be getting her some of those as well!) |

hair dos
oh boy do I have hairstyles for you. My daughter is older and with longer hair but if you want pictures I can send you some of cute 'dos. My daughter likes beads so almost all of them have tons of beads. Let me see if I can attach a few photos here.

will someone please tell me how to do beautiful braids like that!! I just spend $70 for someone to straighten my fsoter daughters hair and they want me to come in and have her hair straightened every 2 weeks. I went there looking for advice and an education on AA hair and they pretty much ripped me off... refused to even recommend shampoo and conditioners for me!!
Altho my baby girl looks adorable with straight hair, I like her kinky curly hair better!!! Her previous foster mom (who was aa) told me to NOT comb it. The stylist said YES comb it every day! So here I am $70 poorer with a 3 yr old who has "white" straight hair and all I want is for her to have a head full of braids!! I am not talented when it comes to hair and have no experience with AA hair... my own hair is always pulled back in a pony tail!

What you need to do is find a little girl -- day care, school, store, etc -- who has a head full of beautiful braids and ask the mom to show you technique. Another adoptive mom showed me 14 months ago how to braid. Now I show other adoptive moms when they first get home with their kids. Once you have the basic technique then it is just a matter of being creative with style. there are 4 basic things you need to know: 1) cornrows 2) box braids (hanging braids) 3) hanging twists and 4) flat twists. I can NOT do a flat twist to save my life but the others I can. I braid my daughter's hair once every 2 weeks or so I do NOT comb her hair every day. And I never leave her hair down. I am so sorry you were talked into straightening her hair. My daughter loves beads and braids and takes such pride in having a cute hairstyle. I hope you find someone in your area who will show you some technique so you can experiment with some great designs.

And some more all as a rather little baby. The first one is flat twists on top and box braids in back.

Actually...the best thing you could do is to join the Yahoo adoption hair and skin care list. And from there it's really just about doing it. Most on there promote no chemicals and more natural products.

Mommmmy,
Thanks for the new hairdo ideas. My daughter is due for a new style this weekend and I think I will try one of the ones in your pictures. I will have to add some beads because she can't stand to be without them. Samantha

I'm so sorry that you had this happen. Unfortunately...sometimes black salons aren't so great. But then the white ones usually have no clue. I'm not really sure what you can do once it's been permed (straightened) my understanding is that you'll probably have to cut it out. However, I know that my daughter's birth aunt did hair and she permed her 10 year old daughters hair and then braided it. You may end up with problems with breakage. Get yourself on that email list and ask on there. There are many foster, adoptive, and bio moms on there who have gone through dealing with permed hair situations. I'm sure you'll need to take care in conditioning the hair now that it's been chemically treated. On that list there is LOTS of info about shampoo and conditioning too. Many on there don't use shampoos at all. But you can find out all about that on there. |

actually its not permed or even textured! I refused to let her do that! She just straightened it with a straightener for $70!!
Thank you for the advice I will check it out!!

Meshgirl,
I am curious as to how she was able to straghten the hair without the use of chemicals? Did she only flat iron it straight? Cause straightening with the use of chemcals is equivalent to a perm. What happens when you wash her hair now? does it revert back to curls? I am just a little confused. You are wise though not to have any type of processing done on a child's hair. I am alittle angry that you were talked into having that done. I agree some salons are clueless. I suppose they make more money on people having to go in for touch ups every couple of weeks. Kind of crazy for a child if you ask me. EZ |
