Samantha

This is what I'm counting on! My DD is 14 mos and has a tender head, so I only get short bursts where she'll let me work on it. I've been successful at getting some twists (not the flat ones) in her hair, but that's about it. Do you moms just gradually increase the amount of time you spend on their hair or just make them sit still until they get used to it? Suggestions?

Aww..that's so cute. I fix Hanna's hair like that, too. And Hanna has the same "fuzzies" at her forehead. I've tried everything but they still spring up!

THERE ARE EIGHT DIFFERENT WAYS YOUR CHILD CAN DIE ON A CORDED WINDOW TREATMENT
Read "How Safe Cords Kill" at www.pfwbs.org

THREE CHILDREN HAVE STRANGLED TO DEATH SINCE ANGEL DIED ON 8/11/09.
Brandyn Coppedge died on 9/11/09. Rosie Smith died on 9/30/09 and Thapelo Kwofie died on 11/1/09. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is no longer recommending safety kits. They are now recommending that anywhere children live or visit should be free of corded window products.

At what age did you start with the cute hairdo's?? Our daughter was born with a head of beautiful hair. She's recently rubbed the back of it almost bald, but the top is getting pretty long. She's only 5 months old right now, so I usually put a pretty bow in the front and that's about it for now.

Athena's hair isn't that long (she's 10 months) but I can get tiny ponytails and baby barrettes in it, and of course she wears headbands. I'm sure she could have braids if she would sit for it... not likely!! I've been able to do a few simple hairdos like that since she was about 6 months. I can braid a straight braid or french but all these twists and braids that keep incorporating the hair so that a braid goes along the scalp.. that I'm at a loss with. You'll have to go to the expert, Samantha, for that.
If you stretch it out how long is your dd's hair? Do you have a picture?

Pic of S

Sitting pretty.jpg
This is one from a few weeks ago. When her hair is wet it is straighter and the front will almost reach to her chin, but once it dries it's beautiful spiral curls, still really soft but you can tell how short it looks here.

My suggestion is that you do quick hairstyles when they are young. But it is important to do hair. My daughter came home at 21 months with a buzz cut. I had about 6 months of just head bands. And then I started getting brave. At first she would only sit for a maximum of 10 minutes to have her hair done. That was with TV on and a toy in her hands. Each time I did hair I tried to have her sit for 1 minute longer. They will not learn to sit for hair unless you work with them. But I do not know how they will do younger then 2 years old. Now she will easily sit through an entire movie while I do hair. But it could easily take 30-40 minutes just to comb it out. I sometimes to part of a hairstyle on Friday, then more on Saturday, and finish it up on Sunday. That is the plan this weekend. I am taking out the chunky (easy to put in) twists and putting in the micro box braids (about 80-90 on her head). That must be done in stages because it easily takes 5-6 hours. What isn't in braids will be in a puff until I get to it.

Slow and steady and only what they can tolerate. Make hair as pleasant as possible.

Samantha

Thank you Oceanica and Samantha! So far she really tolerates the cute barrettes and bows, but they have to be completely covered in ribbon, no metal exposed or she pulls them out! And I don't want her tearing her beautiful hair out. I am going to look today for some product for her hair that a friend suggested and some tiny hair ties to see what she will let me do and see how long she'll keep them in this weekend.

I really hope I added my pictures correctly...been a long time since I've posted pictures on this forum. The 1st should be box braids and the 2nd is several big twists. A factor in styling time varies greatly depending on hair type. My dd's (7) hair is very dense and the braids take almost 8 hours, but are done over several 2 hour sittings. I have someone that comes to my house for those and they last for quite awhile. Stretched, her hair is just past the middle of her back. It has been years since we could do puffs - I just love them on little ones though - they are so cute! I have been going back and forth (in my mind) for about a year considering relaxing it. I haven't yet, still considering and researching. When I was growing up, pretty much all aa friends had their hair relaxed from around age 10 or so.

Becky, those are sooo pretty! That takes a while though!
To be fair the box braids are very small.
I would just like to be able to do some big box braids like these. (That is not my daughter btw)

BeckyS,

Love those box braids. I was planning that for my daughter this weekend (her hair is not that long yet but goes down past her shoulders when stretched out). But here it is Sunday and she is still in a puff. Since I know it takes 6-7 hours to do hers I don't see it happening. But I will hopefully try to start tonight and do a little each night. Love that the box braids last so long.

First hairdo attempt

So we tried to do two puffs this weekend, her hair is still a bit short, but she let me put it up! pigtails.jpeg
