I have a question for anyone that was adopted in the 60's like me....please respond..
If you were adopted in the 60's like me..did your adoptive parents recieve adoption papers as well as an ammended birth certificate????? Well, my adoptive father tells me that the only thing he recieved from the court was my birth certificate..and to that I say..when you go to Wal-Mart they even give you a receipt-why wouldnn't the copurt of given them some sort of adoption papers for crying out loud??!! This is the same man who told me I could never find out who my birthparents were because all the papers burned in Washington years ago, and this is the same man who told me he was friends with friends of my bio-father and that my bio-father was killed in a car accident-talk about a head trip..this adoptive father of mine has had me going with these pitiful stories for years, and once and for all I need to know if the adoptive parents should of been given adoption papers or anything like that???????????? Because I need to confront my adoptive father once and for all..because with him or without him I am going to find my birthparents!!!!! Please respond if you have any info for me........ Have a great day......

Re adopted in the 60's
Hi there..
I was born in 1968 in Massachusetts. I got from the courts my orginial birth certificate, the surrendor of adoption papers signed by my biological mother, the petition of name change my adopted parents submitted, as well as my new birth certificate. I am not sure what my parents received, but I would assume they would have gotten any paper work they had to sign. I hope this helps. Kim |

I was born in '62. As I posted on another thread my parents also deny having any knowledge of details of my birthmother/background.
When I sent away for my non-id I received a "Petition for Adoption" and a final adoption decree. (All the pertinent information was whited out.) I would assume that my parents must have at least received those documents. Whether or not they kept them I don't know. The only birth certificate they have is the amended one which is a fictional document describing how my adoptive mother gave birth to me (ha,ha). I'm sure most adoptees here have the same kind of amended b.c. which is so insulting to us. I mean if it SAID on there that is amended due to adoption and that the parents listed are ADOPTIVE parents then at least it would be truthful instead of that trumped up, bogus document they try to pass off as our one true birth certificate. But I digress...sorry. Wish I could be more help. I don't think there is any one protocol on so called "adoption papers". The variables include when/where/how the adoption took place. Good luck, Sonata |

1964, Muncie, Indiana
I was born in 1964, in Muncie, Indiana, and I was adopted thru a "private" adoption, between a lawyer and the social cervices department in Delaware County. I know for a fact my adoptive parents have "papers"......once, when I was 12, I waited until my folks went to bed, and then I snuck downstairs, snatched my Dad's keyring off the table by the door, and I opened their lock box and snooped!! :-0
So sue me....I was 12!! LMAO ANYWAY, I SAW the "papers"...there was a fianal adoption decree, and some information on the caseworker's homestudy. There weren't any "names" or anything regarding my birthparents, but being the consumate "curious kid", I wrote down all of the information on both documents in my diary! It was also that same night that I located my a-mother's FIRST marriage license -- opening up a whole NEW concept to me that my dear mommy had been married prior to my father --which is a whole different story -- although related in the fact that they keep LOTS of secrets!! ;-) ) ANYWAY....that diary somehow disappeared from my treasures, never to be seen again! Closed minded people REALLY get on my nerves! :-) BUT, to answer your question -- yes, they got something. There were papers.......but I doubt I see them again until after my folks are "gone". They are now locked away at the bank in a lockbox! Hugs, Sal |

New York State 1960's adoption
Hi, I am a birth mother who had a son in 1960, and surrendered him 1961. At the time, the adoptive parents had the option of knowing my name. I do not know if they exercized that option, but it was legal at that time. I also was told that when he became 18 he could go to the agency and find my name out if I gave my permission. I sent the agency a letter giving them this permission. I found out that is not allowed now. The real reason for the secrecy in these laws I believe is to protect the few elite rich people who give children up for adoption. I feel bad that you, and possibly my birth-child, are all suffering to protect the secrets of the priveledged few. When are people going to figure this one out? Good luck with New York State. There was an ad in the Buffalo Evening News a couple of years ago put in by people claiming they could find birth parents/babies for sure. I thought it was a hoax and didn't respond. I could kick myself now because I found they were hackers who had broken into the adoption system and were giving the info out. Take care, and please don't be so angry at your adoptive Dad. He either does not know who your birth parents are, or doesn't want to let you go. Someone loved you very much, because abortions, though illegal, were being performed by competant doctors then. I know, because my family offered to pay for one! Take it easy, and enjoy your life....Your birth mom would want you to, because she paid dearly to give you life... I know...

Papers
There are legal/court papers in every state. Whether or not the adoptive parents have them or not is up to them, whether they kept them or not. The only instance I can think of without a paper trail is in black market adoptions. I believe most adoptive parents keep this paperwork, proven by these posts. I'm wodering out loud if they even obsess over it a little. My experience was that my parents kept the paperwork, every bit of it, but I never, no never once saw it until I asked for it. And believe me, I read other things from the bottom drawer of their dresser, but never saw those things until I started searching and asked for them.

Thank you all soooooo much for responding, you have all been so helpful. Please don't take it the wrong way, I don't dislike my adoptive Dad, but I just wish he would let go of all the secrecy. Adoption is not a shameful thing now, and it should've never been that way. One way or another I will find my birthfamily, and even though my adoptive Dad has put me through the mill with all the secrecy, I still love him. But come hell or high water, I have to know the truth, the whole truth-not just bits and pieces.....Have a great day everybody....

<adopted> children of the 60's
I was born in texas at a military base in 1965. My amom and I opened all the adoption papers just before she died. Unfortunately, all were lost so I am having to start all over again. Track down thru the state Bureau of Vital Statistics. They should have some info to start w/. I am petitioning the district court for a court order to open my unsealed records to get birth info. They say you have to convince the courts as to why you want info. Absolutely ridiculous I say and so many others, check out and sign some of the petitions on these boards to help future searchers. It's free!. My adad sounds like yours... full of crap. Go find out where you come from but, realize he may be afraid to loose you and can't show it. Try to keep him involved if it helps you in your search, otherwise kick him to the curb. My adad would make it extra easy for me if he wasn't such a butthead, but, like you said I WILL find my info w/ or w/out him. Good luck to you and Happy Holidays.

hi , i dont know anything about texas laws with adoption . but when i talked with the people in "mass" , where i was born , at the records dept. at the court house . i was told to open my sealed records , i needed to write why i needed to have my sealed records & strongley state any medical issues that i have . that they would probley open them & give it to me .
ive known all my life that i was adopted . and at the same time i was always made to feel like i am part of my adopted family . as i talked about maybe some day searching for my birth mom , with my adopted family , most of them did support me . but also wanted me to be very carefull of the unknown . not knowing what i would find at the end of my search .they wanted me to know about my birth family . but they didnt want me to be crushed by what i may find. i have one cousin & an aunt who didnt want me to search . they tell me that thier my family & im thiers . they where very hurt at the thought of me searching for any one else . i know that in some ways that sounds unfair of them to say things like this , but i do know that its only because they care for me & love me . they dont want me to be hurt by what i may find .so with respect to them i dont [ & didnt ] bring up the fact that i did search & found my birth mom . i talked to her the frist 2 weeks ago.the rest of my family knows . & thier fine with this . i always tell them all that they will all always be my family , nothing will ever change this . they are the ones who have always been there for me . in good times & bad .

adoption papers
I was born in February of 1962 and was placed into foster care by the state of NJ. I wasn't adopted until Feb. 14, 1969. My adoptive parents have always been very open with me, and have never treated the adoption as something to keep secret. I asked my Dad what he received when the adoption went through and he said that he got the amended birth certificate with my name change, and he thinks he got an adoption decree. He's now searching through his records for these things.
I was born Elizabeth Ann Maines. I can't imagine how your father is feeling; perhaps he feels hurt because he was the one who was there for you, and perhaps he feels he's protecting you. My adoptive parents are very supportive in my search, but they also state that they just want to be assured that I will not get hurt. Good luck to you!
