Does anybody else have their BC marked original

My BC is marked original in the corner even thought it has my name post adoption. Is this common?

Yes. My BC is the same. There was an original however, but that has been sealed. When it was reissued, since that is the one I've used my whole life, it's marked "original", but in actuality, the original probably will remain forever sealed. The only reason I had my information, ie: Bmother's name, etc was from the adoption papers. I don't know how old you are, but this is back from the early 60's.

I have my original birth certificate although I did not get it until I was mid forties. The court approved the petition from my mom to open my file after severe medical problems.

My OBC has a big X in the box illegitimate and my name as Baby xxxxxx and my mothers name. I have it framed.

Kind regards,
Dickons

Thanks Kitty and Dickons,

If we have BC's marked as original then I assume that "amended BC's" are a state by state case. I was concerned that since mine said original not amended mine was changed and I may never see my true original BC.

Funny you ask, back in the eary 1980's, I asked my adopted parents for my BC and they told me they couldn't find it, yeah, like I believed them--not--anyway, I wrote to the state of NY, I was living in Florida at the time, and told them I needed a copy of my "orginal" BC for my passport application. Since I was born before 1960, 1949 to be exact, I was expecting a copy of the adoption one. Well, I did get a copy of the orginial one, and on the back of it said: date of adoption. Then in 1992, when I found my birth mom, she gave me the Orginial that she had, notarized from the hospital was born in. You don't know how bad I wanted to write back to NY and tell them, so much for being sealed---I have my "real"BC. But I didn't, of course!

I think original in this case means not a copy. It is an original document. Sometimes you need an "original" document meaning the one given you by the specific agency rather then a copy of the original. This would be like getting your "orginal" transcripts from highschool or college.

Right as in it is the official document. Does not mean its the original or first simply that it is what the state recognizes.
