Heart Requesting Court to Open File

Has anyone requested the court to open their adoption file for medical reasons or any reason? And if so what was the reason and what happened? I have all the paperwork and want to get this right.....Thanks

Hi HouseMouse

I filed in NJ - reason being Colon Cancer - found at age 49 1/2
Had no symptons just had the test a little early for convenience. Along with my Petition I sent the pathology report as well as pictures.

Judge was sympathetic - felt I had a right to my Medical History - he didn't officially give me my records (I was requesting my OBC - but that wasn't in the files anyway), but he did read through the document and gave me her name and origin and read outloud a little from the file.

Good Luck!

I petitioned the court and was granted my original birth certificate and adoption papers. The state adoption record search program helped me to do this. I think that because my bmom was deceased at the time, it was easier to get my records.

I petitioned a different court to get my bmom's original birth certificate. She had also been adopted and I had searched and found her birth family. So it was a not a secret anymore. But the judge in this case wasn't sympathetic and said I would have to have a "hearing" with birth relatives present and they would have to be interviewed etc. Talk about a big mess over nothing! But I opted to not go through all of that at this time.
