There is an adoptee bill of rights, bill A02277, and the senate version S00235, that are being tossed around in the New York Legislature this year, same as the past 15 years! Please write to speaker Sheldon Silver, and supporters of A02277 to show your support. This bill would unseal New York Adoption records and give adoptees access to their original birth certificate, complete with birthparents names on it. You can visit New York Statewide Adoption's UNSEALED INITIATIVE
for more information, form letters to send to Legislators, and an extensive links page. I can't believe we are so close, yet so far. ![]() |

You know what? I send that stupid letter every single year, haha. I've sent countless emails. Clearly, we're being overlooked.
I'll keep sending that stupid letter, though, because otherwise the legislature gets off the hook - and I find a certain satisfaction in knowing that they are inundated with letters/emails/calls etc.! ![]()

Keep sending emails
I followed the A02277 very closely this session, and it was caught up in codes committee. If you cross-reference the co-supporters of the bill and the members, you have a list of who is against it. I am going to put in a FOIL request to get the meeting records to see who we have to "aim" our emails at next session. I live in albany, and next session, the people at assemblyman Lintol's office won't only know my voice, they will know my face. this is CRAZY! The bill has been shuffled around for 15 years. arg, so frustrating. People who don't know the impact are deciding if adoptees can have rights.
SOOO frustrating, and motivating for me to keep at it. ![]() |

You go girl!! It's amazing to read on the foster parent support site about foster children staying with their foster families, the foster parents not supporting reunification. Then come to this site and see the effects on children placed outside their birth family. Hello, what's wrong with our system??? I will be watching the site and supporting you all in NY with prayers and positive thoughts. I personally am trying to encourage states to pass a new Interstate Compact for Placement of Children--that law is 50 years old!! |
