I petitioned the court for a copy of my original bcertificate. It had something like "not valid for identification purposes" stamped on it. I think it just means that we were given a new "identity" and our original bcertificate doesn't matter anymore. WRONG!
My original bcertificate is one of the most important documents I have ever received! |

My ORIGINAL Original Certificate of Live Birth had "not valid for identification purposes" on it as well. I think it means that we can't claim to be that person legally (even though we really WERE that person!!!!!). It has been wonderful having my ORIGINAL Original... it REALLY gave me validation that I really WAS someone at birth. sal

I agree how "sacred" an OBC can be to an adoptee. I too was amazed to finally see mine dispite knowing my bmom's name and already having met her.
hrisme, usually one has to have a court order to recieve a copy of thier Original Birth Certificate since it is sealed at the Vital Records office in the state you was born in. You should contact the county court and ask what thier process is for you to get a copy of your OBC. You'll more than likely have to petition the court like Snuffie and I did and they may have a form for you to fill out, or you may simply have to write and mail a letter to a judge. Chris |
