Shucks, I was hoping you could talk with my birthfather for me & convince him it's okay to have a meeting! ;-)
I can understand where you are coming from. It sounds like you didn't have nearly as much support from your adoptive parents as I did from mine. I am grateful for the knowledge that my parents did their best, even though they messed up on occasion (do NOT use tough love with a child with major abandonment issues!!!!!).
Do you qualify for medicaid, or whatever it is in your state? That may be one source of medication and (granted, usually limited) therapy. You might look up your local chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness), I have found them exceptionally helpful at locating resources in the community, and just providing overall support! I was able to qualify for SSI, and use most of that to pay the 50% co-pay for my therapist & psychiatrist. I'm not sure what I will do when the insurance runs out, I can switch to medicaid but would have to change providers. I've been through a dozen psychiatrists & have finally found one I feel really good about working with, and I've been with my psychologist for over six years & am not leaving her any time soon!
Thankfully, after years of searching I have finally found a medication that is working for me. Ironically, we were trying all the anti-psychotics to try to get rid of the voices, and I finally told him I'd had enough of those (they all had nasty side effects). We decided I could live with the voices & we'd work on stabilizing the mood instead, so I switched to a mood stabilizer. Within a few weeks the voices were gone. Go figure! I'm still dealing with depression (right now major depression because of situational stuff) & anxiety (again, mostly situational), but I'm functioning a lot better than I was. Finding the right combination of medications and therapy can really help!
