NY Birth Certificate - Valid information?
I have a very basic birth certificate from Rochester, NY, verifying I was born on July 20, 1970.
It seems that some adoptees have mentioned that amended birth certificates from New York may have false information on them. Did they do this as an extra measure to make sure adoptees would never find their birth family? Unbelievable! I've already found that the first three numbers of my Certificate number, which are supposed to indicate the state you were born in, don't match the numbers used in NY. My first three numbers indicate I was born in South Carolina! I know for sure that's not true!!! Anyone with the same experiences?? How disheartening! Is there any way to rectify this? Hi Heather...
I was born in Westchester County, NY in 1966...and I haven't heard too many people speak of falsified NY Birth Certificates....but it's not to say that it couldn't of happened. Brenda

I have the same experience a few years ago indicating that I was born in SC. I can't find where I found that information on the web though a few years ago. Do you have a link? NY State Amended Birth Certificate here as well.

It looks like it is true. I found this http://www.birthfamily.com/state_bc_codes.html
I have 139 on my NY State birth certificate, so I was really born in South Carolina. |

Yep, mine has 139 too. It certainly makes no sense!

I've been seeing that alot LGB. I don't know if that is true or not. If I find out more info, I will let you know. I have hired a PI to start digging as I just can't do it myself as I am in AZ. It doesn't make sense to me either. I haven't found ANY other info except for that link and I've been digging.

By the way, I requested my Long Form Birth Certificate from NYS and it's supposedly on its way. I have never received one to date which lists what hopsital I was born at as my children and husband have. Have you? Each time I request it, I am sent the Amended one which only states that I was born on this date to such and such parents. No time, place, etc.

I've never tried to order my Long Form Birth Certificate. I doubt they'd even send it since it has identifying info. on it?? It's certainly worth a shot though!

Sometimes it does when people order them. It's a roll of the dice! Try it and see what happens.

Hi...
NY State is very strict with identifying info....in my experience, you will not receive any identifying info from the state....unless it's an extreme case of someone needing a liver transplant..or some severe medical condition. Brenda

Hi all- I was reading through the posts regarding the NY Birth certificates- and I decided to look at mine and mine also starts with 139. This is very interesting. I would love to learn more about what these numbers actually mean.

I wouldn't necessarily put any stock in it. I took a look at those lists a while back using MY kids as a reference, and none of them matched. 2 born in Texas, 2 in NY. I also checked my own bc (TX - not adopted) and my husbands (adopted but confirmed NY) and they didn't match the list either.

As far as I know, and I now know my bfamily, all the info on my 1975 amended cert is correct as pertains to my birth. You could try going to the town you were born in and ordering the cert there. They should have both. They may not give it to you but a little verbal eyelash batting never hurt! ![]()

You know, maybe 139 IS a code NY uses for amended certificates. I got very sidetracked with life, but am now starting my search again. I am in Maryland, but would LOVE to take a trip up to Rochester, NY to get my birth certificate in person...with some eyelash batting and all. LOL For now, I will request a long certificate and see what happens.
