I was 41 when I decided to look, and still 41 when I found my birthfamily.
Thanks to a wonderful search angel. My Amom encouraged me to start looking. |

I was 18, I joined ALMA (Adoptees Liberty Movement Association) and attended monthly meetings but didn't begin the actual search until I was 20. I called my birthmother on the phone 3 days later.
I have chosen not to search for my bfather.

I was 37. My shrink told me I had "rejection issues" and it may be a good idea to find out why I had been placed for adoption.

Elizabeth,
If I may, can I ask why you have chosen not to find bfather? I really want to find mine but for many years I pretty much had no interest. I do now only to complete the picture. Don't think I want a relationship. we do possess their genes....as do my children..... I guess, whats happening is I bounce from yes I want ti find him, to naw, it doesn't really matter. I am not sure I have the energy for the drama of itall??? Donna |

I thought about looking many other times, even requested my non-identifying information at around age 38. But I only started looking at age 41, found her (with the help of a PI) a short time later, and made first contact on my 42nd birthday.

I was 48 when I finally did it.........had wanted to search all of my life.......held back by fear.... (of what I might find, of hurting my parents, of being rejected)... am in reunion with bmom, siblings, and extended family for almost 4 years now......wish I had done it sooner... I lost one of my newfound brothers last summer... SO glad that I had the chance to know him... I guess I finally realized for me that knowing anything would be better than not knowing........One great thing is that I can finally fill in the blanks on the health forms with correct information and don't ever have to write..........Adopted.......don't know! sal

I started searching (tangibly) when I was 11.....going thru my parents lock box late at night, when they were asleep and I could "sneak" the key from it's hiding place.
I dug thru everything I could lay my hands on, trying to find some shread of something that would give me information. I spent my teen years "eaves dropping" and trying to get as much information as I could. I joined organizations when I was 18, and out of the house at college. I applied for my non-id info as soon as such an option existed in my state..... And I hired a state appointed intermediary at 38 -- the minute I knew that option existed. But to answer your question in a more "intagible" manner....I searched every day, in my heart, from the day I knew what adoption meant.....which was about three or four years of age. Hugs, Sally

Hi,
I was a lot like Sally, I would go through my aparents files and papers hoping for information. I joined ALMA at age 18, and continued to search for 20 years. I finally found this past summer, thanks to someone in my bmother's family posting their information at a genealogy website (not one of the biggies too). Mary

I've been thinking about looking for a long time. Began looking last year at age 40. No luck so far.
