Bethany, I could not agree more! Adopted kids these days are so lucky to have such open enlightened parents...

thanks for all the replies

hey everyone. it feels great to no I'm not alone in feeling this way. I did talk to my mom about my culture a little bit and as usual it was uncomfortable in the beginning but as i got more and more into what i was talking about it made it seemed like my mom was less on guard and expressed interest in hearing the Colombian music that I had downloaded to my iPod.

Ana! That's great news! I am so glad you talked with your mom and shared with her the music. That is REALLY good progress.

My advice is to try to keep it up, even if it's just little bits here and there...keep your mom involved with your Colombian culture research.

I found out my nationality at age 17 and had a truncated whirlwind of interest in it that I shared with my mom, but it lagged off due in part to her discomfort and in part to me not sharing anything with her - and amom and I went back to having it NOT out there. We backslid...now, 12 years later, I've got to start from the beginning. Keep communicating, dialoguing, expressing how this is something important and special to you.

So glad to see you've come back to update us!Thanks!
