Beginning the search

I am hoping to get some information as to how to begin the search for my birth parents. I don't have any information at all about them or the circumstances of my adoption other than that I was in foster care from birth until I was 4 years old. The state I was born and live in handled the adoption. Any information as to how to get started in finding out who my birth parents are would be helpful.

RE:Beginning The Search

In beginning your search you might want to post as much information that you know about the adoption or even your own personal information would be helpful. I am currently searching for my younger brother and the information you have already given fits. So please tell us more about yourself.

Best of Luck!

RE More Info

Thanks for the tips. Here is more information...I was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on January 5, 1970. I was either taken from or given up by my birth parents at the hospital. All I know about them is that my real Dad was in his 50s and in a wheelchair and had good manual dexterity and my real Mom was in her early 30s and was a house wife at the time of my birth. I lived in one foster home in St. Joseph until I was 4 years old because both my biological parents and their parents had to sign papers to give me up for adoption. The name Emory or Emery was mentioned at the time of my adoption. The state of Missouri handled the adoption. I do know that the adoption was a closed adoption, which is why I have been having so much trouble finding out information about my biological family. Thank you again for the tips and I hope your search goes well for your brother.

Thesearchguru has posted helpful searching information for each state. Here's the search resources for Missouri. Best of Luck!

Missouri Searching Resources
WELCOME TO THE SEARCH AND REUNION MESSAGE BOARD!

If you know what adoption agency handled your adoption contact them for information from your adoption file that will help you with your search. If you were a private adoption or do not know the name of the adoption agency contact this office:

Missouri Department of Social Services
Division of Family Services
PO Box 88
Jefferson City, MO 65103
(573) 751-0311
Fax: (573) 526-3971

INFORMATION THAT IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR STATE:

“Non-identifying information” is information from your adoption file about your birth parents. It generally includes ages, marital status, states of birth, education, religion, occupations and a physical description of your birth parents. This service is also available to birth parents when asking about information about the adopting parents.

“Mutual Consent Registry” is a registry where adoptees and birth parents can register the adoption information. If both parties register normally the agency responsible for the registry will notify both parties that consent has been given to contact each other. Contact this office:
Missouri Division of Family Services
Adoption Information Registry
PO Box 88, 615 Howerton Court
Jefferson City, MO 65103
(573) 751-4329
Toll Free: (800) 554-2222

“Confidential Intermediary Program” is a service sponsored by the state of adoption that will search for and locate the birth family member that you are looking for. This program will make the first contact but if the person contacted declines contact the agency will not give you the information to contact them yourself. There is usually a fee associated with this service through the governing agency of adoptions for your state of adoption.
