I find that I like to escape by reading. I go through one to two paperbacks a week. Recently I read "Adoption Healing" by Joe Soll (which I highly recommend to all members of the triad and therapists) and "Journey of the Adopted Self" by Betty Jean Lifton (which I also recommend, but it will depress you with some of the life stories.)
My Questions is this: What books, articles or sites would you recommend for more insight into the adoption puzzle and why? |

You might like to try Amazon.com's site. Just search for any well-known title, e.g. "Being Adopted," and the return page should include a reading list. I found a lot of titles and reviews this way.

amazon and reasons
Yeah, I reviewed Amazon and bought some more, but I'm looking to get peoples opinions from here. I would like to know what you liked or disliked about these books. Did they make you feel good? angry? sad but stronger? Did you feel they helped you as a person?
For instance, Adoption Healing was a great book to me because the author is both an adoptee and a therapist. this gives him a unique insight into the mind of adoptees. One of the best things I found were the exercises, designed to help adoptees come to term with themselves and the primal wound. Has anyone else read this and have an opinion? Either agree or disagree? |

darkknight, I completely agree with you about Adoption Healing. I actually met Joe Soll recently in NYC, and he's a great guy. I found him to be very compassionate and understanding. He knew exactly what to say, but he didn't just want to make you feel better -- he also gently pressed me to think carefully about some important issues. His background and personality definitely come through in the book.
As for his inner child exercises, one of the people I met at one of his support groups told me that she had been working on adoptee issues for many years, but it wasn't until she started doing the inner child work that she really had some healing breakthroughs. He just came out with a new book for birthmothers -- has anyone read it yet? |

Darknight,
I too agree that Adoption Healing is a great book...I espcially loved the inner child exercises. I was able to do some inner child writing after I did some of those exercises and wrote a letter to my birth mother expressing my feelings...when I was a baby. It is amazing what the mind knows that we can not conciously understand. I have also read "Primal Wound" and I am currently reading "Journey of the adopted self", but I think thus far that Adoption Healing is the best! -Chris |
