I'm Kristie, new to these forums. Wanted to let anyone with a connection to adoption in Nevada know that we are having a Nevada Open (working to open records in this state) meeting... and we need you there!

We'll be discussing action steps we can all take to get the records unsealed in the upcoming 2003 legislative session.

As for me, while I wasn't born/adopted here in Nevada, I do live here now. I'm working locally in the hopes that, the more states that open records, the better the case will be for opening them in other states... like Washington, where I was born/adopted.

Let's help one another by getting active!

I apologize for any confusion caused by my comment. Believe me, as a Washington-born adoptee who has petitioned the courts in that State, I'm well aware that adoption records are sealed up tighter than Grant's tomb and that they employ a CI system.

My point was this: no matter where you were adopted, I'd encourage you to work for open records where you live too. It won't help me personally when we manage to change the law here in Nevada, but with every state that does open records, it strengthens the case for opening them in others. I also trust that, while I work here in Nevada, people in Washington State will work to open records there. Registered voters in that state will hold much more sway with legislators there than I will.

More importantly, we need people in Nevada to become active in our efforts here. Adoptees, birthparents, birthfamily, adoptive parents and family, and people not even connected directly to adoption: we need any and all, who believe in securing equal rights for adoptees, to get involved.

Good question. My best hope is that, by continuing to talk about the issue with people we know, by posting on message boards, by doing petition drives, we'll get a few more people active.
