Some interesting statistics below regarding Census results.
Hawaii Adoption Numbers High from http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/daily...ews/news4.html HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii has among the highest adoption rates in the nation, with nearly one of every 35 children being an adoptee, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report. Of the 238,287 children under 18 years of age in Hawaii, 6,941 - or 2.9 percent - are adopted, according to 2000 census figures. Hawaii ranked among the top 10 states, with percentages ranging from about 2 percent in Delaware, California, Texas and Louisiana to 3.9 percent in Alaska. The nationwide average was 2.5 percent. The Census Bureau's first - ever profile of adopted children shows 1.6 million adopted children under the age of 18 in the United States. Nearly 13 percent, or 200,000, were born outside the country. The profile also found that adopted children live in homes with higher median incomes than children living with a biological parent ($56,000 versus $48,000) and are more likely to live in homes that are owned (78 percent versus 67 percent). Only 12 percent of adopted children live in poverty compared with 16 percent of the other kids. |
