In international adoption there is always the risk that the birth family will come back for their child. If the child is abandoned or relinquished, there is still that risk of a birth family member coming back to take the child home. In fact, they have the right to take back their child up until the moment the official documents are signed when the parents are in the country. True, it may happen less than in domestic adoptions, but it can and does happen. In my two years at this organization, I have seen this happen three times. Fortunately, the adoptive families were still in the States and were referred another child. International adoption still has its risks, too.
