I understand your reluctance to give money to CHS for your search. It doesn't seem fair that they have your personal information and you don't. However, you could possibly save yourself a lot of time in your search. I paid the CHS in VA $400 to do a search with a confidential intermediary. Even though the outcome was not what I had wished for, it was worth every penny to get the information that I did get. It answered some very important questions that I had had over the years.
