Our step-parent adoption was denied and now we are in the process of appeal. The adoption code in Michigan is poorly written and states that you have to have 2 years no contact and no support. He's only started paying regular support in the last year and a half because they charged him a felony for not paying. The even worse news is that we have a trial for parenting time on May 20. The bf won't consent to the adoption, hasn't contacted in any way for almost 6 years (my son is 8 now), and conveniently filed a motion for parenting time 3 months AFTER we filed for the step-parent adoption! Right now, we're trying to get this motion for parenting time suspended until we can get the appeal for the step-parent adoption finished. Has anyone had similar experience with this?
