New to adoption

My husband and I have started looking into adopting from India. We are both US Citizens (Indian Origin for me) living in MI. My mom is very interested in helping us go down this path and can help us with the paperwork from Chennai. But from what I read in this forum, it seems like going through US agency is the best way. Can anyone advice ? Also does anyone have experience with agencies in MI.
