We have had only a few leaks and one or two catastrophic poop releases. These never seemed related to diaper size, they seemed to have more to do with how the daiper was put on or a long car ride. We never paid much attention to the weight given on the package, we just bought the smallest size first and moved up when the closures weren't as snug and the leg opennings were smallish. Our little one is trim too. Just get the next size up and try them now. You're going to use them eventually even if they don't fit now, so no money waisted.
IMHO, there is no such thing a stupid diaper question...
