I'm sorry to say it's harder than you think it might be. I have been with "my" son since he was 6mts old and he will be 4 in Dec. His bio mom is in a mental institution in another state and we (my hubby and I with our 2 bio children and said child) live in Florida. I've been trying to adopt him for the longest time but the courts make it very hard. Unless the dad is willing to relinquish his rights you will have to prove abandoment or abuse in order for the court to terminate his prental rights. I truly wish you the best of luck and I totally sympatize with the situation. I'm the only mommy my son has ever know as well and I want the adoption of my son for him not for me. I'm his mom no matter what I just think it is important for him to know that we are all a forever family and no one in the can ever take that away from him.
