Get your friends & family a copy of the book "Adoption is a Family Affair: What Friends & Family Must Know" by Patricia Irwin Johnston.
As to preschools, have a chat with the directors of the schools you're intrested in. You might find some 'flexibility' OR they may be willing to put you on the waiting list early.
