Another Child to Love (Poem)

Another Child to Love

I held a child today --
No, he was not my own.
He filled my arms for just a while
With a joy I have not known.

Nursing babies, swollen bellies --
Have never been part of me.
The children that my heart calls mine
Came altogether differently.

Two other women held them close
In the safety of the womb,
Then chose the very best they could,
A warm and loving home.

The little girls who share my smile
Not flesh of flesh, but heart of heart --
I teach them life and love and joy,
In this I play a part.

But sometimes an old familiar ache,
My heartstrings tight and taut --
I wish my body worked like those
Which conceive without a thought.

I long for another child to hold,
A family that's complete --
And pray another simple prayer,
Lay my dreams at Someone's feet.

His ways are not my ways,
I know that this is true --
At times I question what He does
But I know that He will do

What is best for me, what's right for me
In His wisdom from above --
So in His perfect time I wait
For another child to love.
