My son's bmom is an alcoholic and his bdad is a meth addict. His bdad's dad and grandfather were both alcoholics. Luckily my son was not exposed during pregnancy. We plan on emphasizing not smoking, doing drugs while he is a child, just like we have with our older children. In addition we plan on sittting down with him sometime between 8 and 10 and emphasizing how important it is that he in particular doesn't experiment with any kind of addictive substance- even nicotene. I have read that cigarettes really are the gate way drug for many addicts. This was true of his bdad. We plan on being really open through his teenage years how his bparents were/are great people and never planned on beings addicts, but it happened, and it destroyed their lives. I don't know the statistics, I should find out at some point, but I am sure genetics play a role in it.
I am hoping growing up away from it will save him. I think maybe checking Al-anon, Ala-teen, or even AA may give you more information.
