Sleepovers were a very important and fun part of my childhood; I don't think you should forbid your child from spending the night with friends. However, with my own kids, I clarify that sleepovers should only occur between close friends. I think you should get to know the parents a little. You can just take a couple hours to hang out and bake cookies or something; not a big deal! You can decide if these are good people or not.
If you decide they're okay to sleep over with, find out exactly who will be present at the sleepover. Don't panick your daughter, but tell her that if she gets uncomfortable, she's always welcomed to call home and you won't be angry.
