utah adoptions

We live in Utah and are thankful that we do for the good adoption laws here! We have adopted 6 times and have been involved with 9 possible adoptions over the years. Only all of our children were born in other states!

The laws in Utah say that a birthmother and birthfather can sign no earlier than 24 hours after the birth and that at those relinquishments, it is final. The 6 month waiting period in utah before you can take your baby to court and finalize the adoption is said to "be for the adoptive families sake"---so if things happen during that 6 months to make you desire to change your mind from the adoption, you can. (I don't know of anyone who ever has, though! and I have been involved in this for 10 years, now!)

We have always had just one lawyer helping us--except for the one time that our birthmom and baby were in California--our lawyer in Utah worked with a lawyer in CA to have everything according to the laws in both states. But if you live in Utah and the baby will be born in utah, one lawyer should work great! Make sure to have the birthfather all checked into---they are really the wild cards in adoption today--2 of our scams were because she was "running away" from the birthdad---and he still wanted the baby!
