I'm sorry, where are all these waiting children of which you speak? Are you suggesting that we should adopt from the foster care system?

I have enormous admiration for people who take on the special needs and issues associated with adopting children who have been removed from their families because of neglect and abuse. They often have tremendous challenges and I applaud them.

They are braver people than I am -- I feel don't capable of volunteering for those challenges.

There is little similarity between adopting an abused child and adopting a child from a well-run orphanage. My daughter has never been abused, has suffered little trauma (other than the separation from the only home she ever knew). She is well-adjusted and happy.

There are a million reasons we decided to adopt internationally--known timelines for placement was one. The realtively young age of the available children was another. The fact that we would be adopting a child with NO family appealed to us too.

Tell me, why is an American child more deserving of a family than a child living in an orphanage overseas? A better question is and one that shows genuine concern for human suffering is: "With all the children in the world who need homes, why are Americans having babies?"

I'm sorry if I'm sounding abrupt, but this question irritates me in part because of its inherent jingoism. Hope I've brought some clarity for you.
