10 Ways to Help your Child Get Organized

Hi,

Developing good organizational skills is important for success in school and in life. Although some of us are by nature more organized than others, we have help our kids by putting routines and systems in place. Here are a few ideas:

1. Use checklists - for assignments, household chores and reminders.
2. Organize homework assignments - number assignments in the order they need to be finished and avoid saving the toughest for last.
3. Designate a study space - a quiet place with few distractions.
4. Set a designated study time - preferably before TV time.
5. Keep organized notebooks - which will help for reviewing assignments and organizing materials for tests.
6. Clean up book bags and notebooks each week and organize old tests and papers in a separate file.
7. Create a household schedule - with regular dinner times and bed times - rest is so important.
8. Keep a master calendar for household commitments and extra curricular activities.
9. Prepare, prepare, prepare - before bedtime, pack schoolwork and books and get clothes ready for the next day so it's not a rush in the morning.
10. Provide needed support for your child while s/he is learning to be organized and encourage her/him to request your help with projects before the night they are due!
