Not Surprised

I am not surprised by this. It's sad, though. Both my kids remember their alcoholic mothers who severely neglected them. I've tried to explain alcohol addiction to them but it's hard. How do you say "I'm sorry you were left alone for hours and starved and hit because your mother chose alcohol over your well-being"?? Yet that's the reality. In Russia if you don't drink you are seen as being a nutcase. Both my kids were given beer in their orphanages. Both smoked for a while - as 8-10 year olds! No wonder the life expectancies there are so dismal.
