I did have to take mine off. A suggestion~ if you are carrying a backpack as your carryon, they often will have two zippers that connect on the main bag. I got a little lock to attach the holes of the zippers. When I had to go through security pat down check points in Northern Ireland (I was there during some rough patches) and the Eastern block countries, I would discreetly remove my money belt in a bathroom stall, put it in my backpack and CARRY my backpack to the security checkpoint. The lock would be a little extra sense of security for me and if they asked me to unlock that portion for some reason, I was able to actually see the security guard going through the contents. This worked for me several times. Just a suggestion.
