I have many squirrels in my yard too. I also have a garden with tomatoes, many varieties of peppers, beets, carrots, spinach, cabbage, cucumbers, strawberries, green beans and many kinds of herbs(thyme, oregano, sage, cilantro, parsley, basil and dill). They have never bothered my garden. Now on the other hand we occasionally have rabbits that will eat my plants. Especially this year my pepper plants have not done so well because of the rabbits. Of course we also have a dog that tends to keep the squirrels at bay too.
Concerning herbs I have read that they help keep ants away from other plants and it works to a certain extent but not completly. But keeping squirrels away....never heard of it. But hey it's worth a try.
My boys have really gotten into gardening this year especially my 9 year old. It's fun to see the enthusiasm that he has each day to check on the garden and are they growing.
Good luck on your garden and hope to hear how it continues to grow.
