I don't know much about situations like yours, but what I do know is that an "explanation" from them really won't do you any good, nor will it help you have the relationship you want.
If I were you, I'd just call them up and ask for a visit. Or to speak to her on the phone to chat for a while. Something like that is really what you want, isn't it?
