Domestic agencies tend to be a lot less rigid than international programs -- many of them decide on a "case by case" basis and instead of "no parents with X condition or Y disease" they say things like "able to live normal life expectancy and care for a child". But most of them tend to place newborn or very young infants.

You might also check out adopting through your state's foster care system. The children there have come from homes with abuse or neglect, more than likely, so they may have some issues you're not prepared to deal with.
