No one is asking you to lie. Some home studies will specifically ask this question, and certain agencies have rules regarding depression and adoption. As far as I know, there is nothing posted on the CARA website regarding this issue, and have only known this to be an agency policy. The home study is to determine that you are suitable for parenting a child. If your depression interferes with your ability to handle responsibly day-to-day life, then I think this is something you need to examine closely about yourself and decide if adopting a child is best for you. On the other hand, if the depression episode was dependent on an unfortunate event (situational depression), and eventually resolved, then put this into perspective. American doctors grossly over-prescribe depression meds for these things, which in the past were dealt with by living connected to other people, friends and families helping us through difficult times.
