Failed Adoption reply
We had a failed adoption and an adoption that worked out this year and were excited because we are in Utah and knew we could claim our deductions for both on our Utah taxes. However, when we went to do this we found out that at the end of the legislative session the Utah Legislature had revoked ALL of the adoption deductions beginning with the 2008 tax year! We were so devastated. You need to write Governor Huntsman and your representative and ask that they reinstate them and that they backdate them to cover this tax year. It's important that they hear from enough of us to get them to do this!
So, you can still get money back on federal taxes via a tax credit--but you will not recoup any money this year for money you paid in 2008 for adoption via deductions on your Utah Taxes. Please write your leaders!
