Yes, funny you should ask about the coughing. When I am rocking if it goes off before we are to drowsy state, I cough to set it off again. I love this soother, I do think it helps for him to fall back asleep on his own in the middle of the night. It also comes with a mattress vibration that you can use as well. My son likes this, but I'm sure some may not. It does take a ton of batteries though, be prepared.
