Does his room have an over head ceiling mounted light? If so could you install a dimmer switch on it?
You could also try one of those battery operated lights that you can put in closets and other places that you push to turn on. You probably could mount that fairly close to the crib on the wall and that might put off enough light.
DD has two wall mounted night lights both plug in. One near the dresser that we leave on all night for her. One near the crib that we leave on until we put her down for naps and for the night.....so we can see to change her diaper....if we need to in the middle of the night.
