When my daughter was little, my husband installed a dimmer switch in her room so we could just keep the light on 'low.' So if you are DH are handy that would be an option.

We also have a plastic light shapped like a star from IKEA (they also have/had moons) with a low watt bulb that makes a great nightlight. It plugs in like a lamp, but mounts on the wall so you don't need a flat surface like with a lamp and it can't be pulled down like a lamp.
