It is not at all unusual for cases to be continued - and for them to be continued more than once. There are many reasons that a case might be continued (technical issue needs to be resolved, attorney schedule, court schedule, expert evaluations are not complete . . . )

As to why is happened at the last minute - my guess is that the state's attorney has a large caseload and while they do keep track of all cases on an ongoing basis, they really don't look at the technical details of any particular case until preparing for trial shortly before it is scheduled.

Continuances are frustrating for all involved, unfortunately they are often unavoidable.
