No need to rinse with water daily and use a conditioner that you rinse out. Use a leave-in conditioner when you comb out the hair and a conditioner that you rinse only when you wash it. Braids should last several days and will keep the hair from tangling. (Puffs don't.) I comb out and condition my son's hair daily because it isn't braided so it will tangle. It's actually long enough to cornrow, but he just seems too young for that style. You may run in to the same thing with a boy if your county has rules about cutting a foster child's hair - as the county my son is from does.
